The Australian Tax Office has warned the public of a phone scam where people have been intimidated into paying fake tax debt.

Thomas Ryan the assistant commissioner at the ATO has asked for people to be vigilant and says the ATO would not call taxpayers in a threatening manner.

“We take your privacy seriously. We urge you to be alert to these types of scams and never send money or give your financial details to someone you don’t know and trust,” said Mr Ryan, speaking to accountants daily

The ATO has suggested that if you receive a call from the tax office and are concerned to ask for the caller’s name. You can then contact your local Accountancy Services office/accountant and we can confirm if it is a legitimate call.

If you are in need of tax debt relief remember we are here to help and can assist in negotiating with the ATO on debt release and payment plans.
